Simplifying your wardrobe can feel daunting at first, but trust me—it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need to pull out everything at once and create a giant mountain of clothes on your floor. Let’s break this into small, manageable steps that will leave you feeling lighter and more organized without the chaos.
Here’s exactly how I tackled my own wardrobe and made real progress!
Step 1: Tackle One Section at a Time
Instead of emptying your entire closet, start with one drawer or a small section of your hanging clothes. Once you’ve got that area under control, move on to the next. This method keeps things manageable and helps you avoid that dreaded “I’m in too deep, and now I’m stuck” feeling.

Pro Tip: Use your (made) bed as your workspace and make piles to categorize your clothes—group all your tops, pants, dresses, etc., together so you can clearly see how much you have.
Step 2: Make Decisions Based on Your Now Body
One of the biggest mindset shifts that helped me was realizing I needed to dress for my now body, not the body I might have in 10 pounds. If clothes don’t fit, don’t make you feel great, or just aren’t comfortable for your current season of life, it’s okay to let them go.

But what about those “almost” items you aren’t ready to part with yet? This is where the Time Will Tell bin comes in handy.
Time Will Tell Bin: If you have items you love but aren’t quite sure about, put them in a designated bin (each person in your household can have one!). Limit it to what fits in that bin—no overflow allowed. After 3 months (or when the season changes), revisit it. If you haven’t reached for those items, you’ll likely find it easier to let them go.
Step 3: Declutter Your Fantasy Self Items
We all have “fantasy self” clothes—the ones we imagine wearing in a more glamorous, idealized version of our life. For me, it was my collection of dressy clothes from my old office job. I used to keep them as just in case items, but I realized I only need one or two dresses for weddings or special events, and the rest could go.

Once I made that connection, I freed up so much space. Embracing the life I have now (hello, first-time mom life!) made it easier to let go of those “past season” clothes that no longer serve me.
Step 4: Stick to a Color Palette
Another game-changer? Simplifying my wardrobe to a cohesive color palette. When you stick to a handful of colors, it makes mixing and matching so much easier. No more standing in front of your closet thinking, “Nothing goes together!”

Tip: Search for color palette inspiration online. Some people fall into categories like “warm autumn” or “cool summer.” Knowing your palette can help you build a wardrobe that works seamlessly.
Step 5: Dress for Your Current Season of Life
Life changes—your wardrobe should reflect that. Whether you’re in a transition period (pre-baby, postpartum, career shift, etc.), it’s okay to let your wardrobe evolve, too. We don’t need clothes that don’t fit taking up precious space or mocking us every time we open a drawer. No thank you!

For me, my current wardrobe consists mostly of comfy lounge sets that can be dressed up or down—put-together enough for a grocery run or baby appointments. Even jeans went into my Time Will Tell bin because they just aren’t practical right now.
Final Thoughts and Next Steps
Simplifying your wardrobe isn’t about perfection—it’s about creating a space that makes getting dressed easy and enjoyable. If you focus on one small section at a time and let go of what no longer serves you, you’ll be surprised how quickly things start to come together.
To help you get started, here’s a handy checklist to guide you through the process:

- ✅ Use a Time Will Tell bin for clothes you’re unsure about. Set a 3-month time limit.
- ✅ Stick to a cohesive color palette for easier mixing and matching.
- ✅ Declutter fantasy self items—dress for the life you have now.
